Strategic Intent
Aligned with the DHET’s plans to create a South Africa that can provide decent opportunities for youth and adults through education and skills development initiatives, as well as the DSI’s Decadal Plan on STI, the Presidential PhD Programme is a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to build and strengthen the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system since the advent of democracy.
The Presidential PhD Programme
The programme is further supported by the NRF’s Vision 2030 mission to enable and facilitate the contribution of knowledge and scientific research to national development, and to position South Africa as a global leader in research and technology. The strategic intent of the PPP is founded on:
Capacity building
Developing a new generation of researchers with the skills and experience needed to drive innovation and address complex challenges.
Global Leadership
Elevating South Africa’s research capabilities to compete on a global scale, particularly in high-impact fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
Knowledge Transfer
Facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise between South Africa and leading international research institutions.
A Transformative Force in South Africa’s Research
By 2030, the PPP aims to be a transformative force in South Africa’s research landscape, contributing to national development and global scientific progress.
